Connecting Remote Communities

Children from the Indigenous People Community (Buhi, Camarines Sur)

Thanks to our staff and partners, People of Grace Philippines completed a wonderful school year with 234 students, 34 of whom received scholarships. Our new facility is partly in use—four classrooms, the library, and the main hall—but it still draws power from the old building. We expect a full permit and a separate electricity source so the new building can operate independently in the coming school year.

It’s summer in the Philippines, and teams from Manila have already visited (April 16–20) with another team preparing to go (May 18–21) to provinces across the Bicol Region. I’ve had the pleasure of taking a team from Surrey, BC, to do work in the same communities.

One recent outreach was at the Vision Center in Buhi, Sorsogon. Vision Center runs weekly programs for local kids, pre-teens, Indigenous People (IP) /Aeta Community, and youth in Malate. A team member shared a moving visit to the Aeta community:

“A 15–20 minute walk from the Vision Center—across rice fields, narrow bridges, and hills—the children ran excitedly to greet us at the kubo (hut). The local leader, Eugene, said children used to run away from visitors, and many stop studying at a certain age to help with farming, fishing, or selling. That day only one adult—a mother with a toddler—came out, but the children joined our program, played, and learned. When we talked about answered prayers, Patricia said she had asked God for a sibling and was blessed with a sister named Angel. Some team members stayed afterwards to swim with children in a nearby stream.” — Ling

Working with vulnerable remote communities has taught us that beyond material aid, our love, presence, and time bring hope, vision, and a connection to the wider world. Thanks to your partnership, we can continue reaching rural areas with care, education, and encouragement.
